A Little About Your Teacher

HI. I'm Byrne deGrandpre, a faculty member in the Department of Special Education at Plattsburgh. I love the word "teacher" and the role of being a teacher. I can't imagine doing anything else with my life. The fall semester, 2005 will be the start of my 27th year at Plattsburgh State University of New York. I'm proud to be a member of this wonderful university and honored to be a faculty member in the Department of Special Education.

If you're new to Plattsburgh, this is a wonderful little city and community. And the Department of Special Education is a great place for you to be. After 32 years of teaching in the field of Special Education, I am just as excited to start this semester as I was to begin my first year as a special education teacher at Saranac Central School, just 15 miles from Plattsburgh.

I'm a Plattsburgh native, having been born and raised in this community during the 40s and 50s. I did my undergraduate studies at St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire during the 60s. I earned my master's degree in special education at Syracuse University in the late 60s and after a few years of public school teaching in special education in the Saranac Central and North Syracuse school districts, I returned to Syracuse University and completed my Ph.D. in Special Education with a concentration in Mental Retardation in 1974. Following graduation, I moved to Illinois and taught for five years in the Department of Special Education at Illinois State University. I then returned home to Plattsburgh to begin my teaching career at Plattsburgh State in the fall of 1978. I've had a wonderful time at Plattsburgh and hope to continue teaching here for many years.

As a new semester gets underway, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you and to wish you well as you move forward in your preparation for a career in teaching as a special educator. You've chosen a wonderful path filled with many challenges and great rewards.  As a teacher, you can make a substantial difference in the lives of children and their families. Is there a better way to spend your time, your energy, your life? I think not. Have fun and learn all you can.
