Local-Global Connections in the World-System

 Due: at the start of class on Thursday September 10, 2009

 

Your first assignment in GEG 121 Human Geography is to write a report about local-global connections in your home community.  The goal of this exercise is for you to gain a critical understanding of the significance of global frameworks and power relations in the world-system today. 

 

The text of your report should be printed in 12 point font, formatted with 1.5 line spacing and will be worth a total of 200 points. 

 

Your report will be graded in terms of: a.) the scope and detail of your local-global connections, b.) relevance of your specific examples, c.) explaining the connection to the world-system and d.) clarity of your writing.  You will also make a 1-2 minute oral presentation in class about this report.

 

For examples see 2.5 Geography Matters - Commodity Chains, page 70-71 and 7.3 Geography Matters - Clothing Industry, page 280-81 and 7.4 Geography Matters - Wal-Mart, page 286-87.

 

               Required Format and Components

 

1.     Title page with your name, date, name of this class, title of your report and location map - copied from the internet – 1 page.

 

2.     Discuss how local-global connections in the world-system have transformed your home/community during the past 5-10 years.  This should focus on global connections in your home/community on social, economic, political, environmental, and/or cultural themes.  Specific examples may include retail businesses, new technology (e.g. internet & cell phones), energy resources, clothing, toxic waste, tourism, immigration, corporate ownership/global brands, food regimes (e.g. ethnic, fast-food, organic), changes after 9/11, etc.  

 

3.     2 full pages minimum and 3 pages maximum length for the text of the report, plus title page.
