| A Hike Through Time | Fossil Hunt | Oooh Ahhh | | |
At
the Grand Canyon the UB group has a grand opportunity to pear down into 3
billion years of geologic history. Before descending down into the Grand
Canyon, the students spread the geologic time scale out along the rim of the
Grand Canyon. 4.6 billion years are crammed into 100 feet of trail.
The class recreates the history of the earth and traces the evolution of single
celled organisms to the blossoming of life in the Cambrian to the death of
dinosaurs and evolution of humans! And then... we descend down into the
Canyon.
On the South Kiabab Trail we examine fossils of the Permian Kiabab formation.
Why are
the sides of the Grand Canyon stepped? Which layers and rock types make
cliffs and which layers make gradual slopes? Ponder this as you oooh and ahhh
at the view.
