Chazy's Spectacular Snail Fossils

    The Crown Point Formation consists prodominantly of fine-grained limestone that was deposited in a shallow sea about 450 million years ago.  It is known for the occurrence of a snail fossil, Maclurites magnus, which can be found in great abundance in this outcrop.

  The Maclurites specimen in the adjacent photograph shows a wee bit of displacement along a minor fault or joint.
