Wetland Ecology

Wetlands of various sizes are interspersed throughout the barrens, especially in the locations where drainage is restricted by bedrock structure and hydrology.  Bogs and bog-like fens (poor fens) are the major wetland type, with dominant plants including leatherleaf, tussock sedge and blue-joint grass.  These wetlands are an important factor in the over-all habitat requirements for many species of birds, amphibians, and mammals living in the barrens.
