"Clergyman, born in
Inowroclaw, Poland. He spent World War 2 in forced labour on a German-run farm.
He was ordained priest in 1956, and became Bishop of Warmia in 1979, succeeding
Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski as Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, and Primate of
Poland, after the latter's death in 1981. A specialist in civil and canonical
law, Glemp was a prominent figure during Poland's internal political unrest. He
was made a cardinal early in 1983."
