In this second scenario, the concentration of ions on either side starts out the same as in the last example, but now there's a selectively permeable barrier between them. This barrier only allows the K+ ions to pass through:

Since K+ is allowed to move down its chemical gradient, it crosses the barrier to the right side. The Cl- can't pass and stays on the left side.
