If you are a pre-med student, you should consider the Pre-Med Internship program at CVPH. This can be taken for credit as an internship (BIO498 or CHE498) with one credit awarded for every 3 hours/week of service (see below). This is a great opportunity to go into the hospital and get experience with patient care while earning University credit.
To sign up, you need to go to the Biology office
and get an Internship form.
You should fill this out with the course title “CVPH Internship.”
You will need to choose a faculty sponsor.
This can be either Dr. Linda Luck or Dr. Donald Slish.
This form requires other signatures, including Sandra Geddes at CVPH, and
is then dropped off at the
Dean’s office (in Hudson Hall).
You will need to contact Sandra Geddes (sgeddes@cvph.org
or 562-7595), who is the CVPH volunteer coordinator. Discuss with her
which service you are interested in (for some options,
see below), and what your goals are (i.e., what you plan to get out of this
experience). There has been a lot of
interest in these internships, so have a back-up option if Sandra can’t
accommodate your first request. Sandra
will help you to schedule a time to be there.
Internship credit will be awarded based on the
amount of time you spend in the hospital per week; three hours in
service per week is worth one credit (similar to labs).
This is a total of 45 hours per credit per semester.
You need to decide this as you fill out your Internship form and
stick with it throughout the semester.
You can only take 1 credit per semester and a total of 3 credits while
here at Plattsburgh.
There is a training session for interns that you must attend. This training session will be offered twice, on the Wednesday and Thursday of the second week of classes. You must attend the training session to continue in the internship.
For this Internship you will be given a letter grade based on three things:
your performance at the hospital (as reported by the staff on duty), a
journal that you will keep during the semester, and final report (2-4 pages)
that you will write. The paper is due on
the Wednesday of the last week of classes. We can talk
more about these when you come with your Internship form to be signed.
This internship can also be done over the summer, the same hours/credit as above.
Thank you for your interest in the program. If you would like to participate, the forms need to be signed and submitted by the end of the first week of classes in the semester that you plan to volunteer.
