If
we were to look up the word culture in a dictionary, we
would be confronted by such terms as customary belief,
social norm, shared attitudes, values, goals and
practices: the commonalities by which societies live and
function.
There are many factors which contribute to this
definition of culture: religious beliefs, gender roles,
physical environment and others. Each plays a specific
role in society. There is another factor which perhaps
contributes more to today's cultures than any other:
capitalism.
Capitalism is often thought of as a political or
economic system, but it is more than either of these.
Capitalism pervades every aspect of the culture in
countries which have adopted it as a way of life and has
greatly affected cultures which have not adopted it.
Capitalism affects every aspect of our lives, from the
way our children are born to the way our dead are laid to
rest. It affects how we think, what we wear, what we eat,
where we live, what we buy and how we buy it. There is no
part of our lives which is not in some way affected by
capitalism.
This website is dedicated to the study of this
phenomenon. In order to understand a topic as complex as
capitalism and the way it affects the world, it is
necessary to trace it from the pre-capitalist eras
through time. We must look at cultures and how they
functioned before capitalism as well as its evolution
from the early trade routes, to the discovery of the new
world, and on to the world today.
In order to do this, this website is divided into
courses through which we shall learn and supporting
resources from which to draw information. From the
index page you will be able to access all of the courses
and information which resides on the website. Enjoy
your exploration.
