Textbooks

Class:    Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Volumes 1 and 2, by Randall D. Knight.  Pearson Addison Wesley.  ISBN 0-321-28482-8. Price $68.40.  This package contains both volumes, the access code, the Student Workbook, and Mastering Physics.  You must purchase these texts as I will be setting homework, collecting your homework, and assigning grades for your homework via the software that accompanies the text and they are only accessible through a password protected link.  Each text has a unique password enclosed in the package.  Each student must have an assigned password.  If you buy a used copy of the texts (make sure it has the same ISBN number), you must also purchase your password ($36.00) via this link:

I will assume that all students have the text and a password no later than the end of the second class session of the semester.

To access the course you will need the course ID: MPLEWIS0008.  Please enroll as soon as you can - there is a test assignment due on 8/29, 11pm!

Lab:    In-house lab notes, only obtainable at the College Store.  Price:  a few dollars.

Course Coverage

Physics for Scientists and Engineers is a traditional approach to introductory physics.  Its major merit is its clarity, its wealth of examples, and its web approach to homework assignments and grading.  Basically, each student will have a password that permits access to my homework assignments.  You will attempt the assignment via your computer and your attempt will be recorded in a class database.  You may choose to open links to hints that help you solve the homework question, but such use may result in a small penalty on your grade.  You may repeat an assignment several times during the time the assignment is valid.  Only when you submit it will it be entered in my class database.  Details of this will be given in my first lecture and the text contains a help sheet that introduces you to the method, which is very transparent after a few uses.  I encourage you to sign up as soon as you have your password at this link:

 http://session.masteringphysics.com/cgi-bin/sms_login.pl?productID=23025

I will set a trial (non-graded) assignment the first week of semester which will give you an opportunity to familiarize you with the software.

Course Mechanisms

Classes will be mainly of the lecture variety, stressing clear explanations of the basic topics.  I will assign homework via the web, as outline above, and there is extensive worked examples for you to study, both in the text and on the web.  I will expect class interaction in the form of questions and requests for clarification of physical concepts.   I will also use part of the lab session for problem solving, demonstration experiments, and in-depth explanations of the theory behind the lab exercise.  You will be required to bring the text book to the labs.
