This is the legal stuff!
You must purchase the text Physics for Scientists and Engineers, with its enclosed password. You are expected to attend all classes. However, attendance is not required - but I will consider lack of homework/absence from labs as a indication of a failing grade. You are responsible for understanding and acting upon any and all announcement that I make in class that could affect your grade - e.g. setting of homework, deadlines, change of schedule. I will try to post these announcements on this Web Site, but sometimes I forget. Better to hear it in class.
Attendance at lab sessions is obligatory. You should see me beforehand if you know you will miss a session - try to arrange attending an alternate lab that week. Unexpected absence at lab requires you to see your me with a valid, documented excuse. I will instruct you on what to do to make up the absence. Too many absences can be grounds for failure on the course (not just the lab!). Labs will be graded according to my standards which will be made clear to you during the first lab - follow these recommendations for your reports.
There will be four exams - three during the semester (see schedule) and one during final week. Attendance at these exams is obligatory. The procedure for absences is the same as for labs - see me - preferably before the absence with a very good excuse. NOTE: leaving early for any reason is NOT a valid excuse. You will receive an E for that absence. There will be NO make-up exam without a valid excuse.
The exams will test you on the material covered since the previous exam. However, physics is not a compartmentalized discipline - earlier studies are used in various different ways in later topics - so you should realize that studying for Exam III will require some attention to the material tested in Exams II.
I will set homework problems on a regular basis. They will be set via the web and grading will be automatic. After the assignment you will be able to see the solution. I expect you to make consistent and serious attempts at completing the homework. Study the solutions to aid you in problem solving ability. Late homework will not be accepted or graded as the computer sets an exact deadline date and time for each assignment..
