Student teachers launching rocket in science class

Our task in our time together is multifaceted:The purpose of this class is to explore various methods for teaching science in the elementary school.  The nature of the class is very much participatory and adventuresome.  Through our participation and the spirit of adventure, we will all become more knowledgeable and articulate in the realm of science, which touches our lives in so many ways.

During our experience together, I challenge you to delve into areas which are new and perhaps a bit intimidating to you.  In fact, I will accept nothing less.  Do not propose to present any projects which are already known to you and all others in our class.  This is a time to learn MORE.

In Spring 2004  our class motto will be "Spirit and Opportunity", and just as the brightest of the world scientists revel in their own spirit of exploration, research, and plausible explanations, and just as they seek opportunities to learn, question and explore...we will venture through this course experience with positive spirits reaching for every opportunity to learn.  Always, we will be striving to "develop the teacher, scholar, and colleague and scientist within".

Picture of poster session for student teachersThroughout this exploration of science and science methods you will be encouraged to develop the KNOWLEDGE which been given opportunity to learn even before this class.  Your SKILLS in observation, research, scientific method and explanation will be encouraged to develop as you begin to develop as a teacher.  Positive, inquisitive, collaborative DISPOSITIONS are key in this course.

Science does require and thrive upon communication which is clear, concise and accurately articulate.  Your explanation skills will be tested. Your research endeavors will be challenging, just as your careers in science education will be challenging, exiting and powerfully important as we make our way through the 21st Century.

Attendance, participation and attitude all "count" in this class.  Your enthusiasm as we progress is an indication of your future ability to motivate students.

Projects

  1. All students will prepare and present an approved "hands on" activity for class.  You will also give a one-page rationale and basic plan with questions to stimulate learning and add relevance.

  2. All students will prepare a visual display and a two-page paper presenting an Issue/Person in Science with Relation to Social and Historical Perspectives.

  3. Use of an approved novel at the 4-8 grade levels.  The novel will teach science directly or enhance science.  This is your gift to the class you teach.  It is a teacher-driven/centered project.  You will critique the novel for science enhancement and provide a calendar for teaching while using the novel (2-3 pages). You  will include at least five science studies or acivities as a part of this project

  4. You will prepare a two-page report on the use of Art and Music to Enhance Science Education.  You will present your fine art and music in small groups during class.

  5. In groups of 2-3, you will choose a topic and prepare lessons for 2-3 weeks at 2-3 levels as a teaching team.  Included in this project:

I will be in the schools to observe your progress and to help you prepare lessons as needed.  I look forward to working with you.

Take some leaps and risks in your experiences in this class.  Stretch your minds and broaden your knowledge base bfgh.  I will encourage as well as critique.

We will also have 2-3 content  quizzes as part of your grade.
