Writing Assignments F2002

Writing Assignment #1

WebQuest: Select a topic on a basic aspect of immunology discussed in Chapter 1. Your assignment should be 2-3 typed pages.

  1. Summarize the text information on your topic in Chapter 1 and subsequent chapters. Search the internet for your topic (see text website and suggestions at the ends of chapters to start).
  2. Locate 3 or 4 relevant sites, provide the URL and attach a print out of just the home page for each site to your assignment.
  3. Compile and integrate the information from your sites with what is in your text to discuss your topic.
  4. What additional questions do you have from your WebQuest?
  5. Be prepared to discuss your findings with the class.

Writing Assignment #2.

Locate an article published since 1999 on any non-medical/clinical aspect of immunology. You may use highly technical journals, such as Science or the Journal of Immunology, or popular press magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Science News, or Scientific American. You may use either back issues in the library or check out the journal sites on the internet; if you do use the internet, be sure you are using an article published in a reputable magazine, and not an opinion piece or a website for the topic. The article must be a minimum of two full printed pages. Your assignment should be 1-2 typed pages or 2-3 handwritten.

  1. Attach a copy of the article or a printout from the web. Be sure to include the citation of author, title, journal, year, volume and pages, and/or the URL.
  2. In a paragraph, briefly sum up the article. Include what the purpose of the study/article is, a summary of the results, and conclusions.
  3. Summarize what your book covers on the topic (give page numbers).
  4. How does the article extend, complement or refute your textbook?
  5. What is the significance of the topic in immunology?
  6. What additional questions do you have on your topic?

Writing Assignment #3

WebQuest: Your final report should be 2-3 typed pages.

  1. Select a topic on any clinical or medical aspect of immunology (excluding HIV and AIDS). Review the text for information on your topic.
  2.  Search the internet for your topic. Locate 3-4 relevant sites, provide the URL and attach a print out of the home page for each site to your assignment.
  3. Compile and integrate the information from each site with what is in your text to explain the immunologic basis of the disease, symptoms, treatments and prognosis, plus anything else of interest.
  4. What questions do you have?
  5. Be prepared to discuss your findings with the class.

Writing Assignment #4

a. Log onto a library search engine. This can be any one, like BIOSIS or MedLine. Starting in 1980, do a search every three years for papers dealing with HIV or AIDS or other topic specific to HIV, such as gp150 or reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Graph the number of citations by year.

b. Locate an article published since 2000 on HIV or AIDS or related topic. I suggest you stay away from highly technical journals this time, and focus on Time, Newsweek, Science News, or Scientific American. You may use either back issues in the library or check out the internet; if you do use the internet, be sure you are using an article published in a reputable magazine, and not an opinion piece or a personal website. The article must be a minimum of two full printed pages. Your assignment should be 1-2 typed pages or 2-3 handwritten.

  1. Attach a copy of the article or a printout from the web.
  2. Give the appropriate citation of author, year, title of the article, journal, volume and pages, or the URL.
  3. In a paragraph, briefly sum up the article. Include what the purpose of the study/article is, a summary of the results, and conclusions.
  4. Summarize what your book covers on your topic.
  5. How does the article extend, complement or refute your textbook.
  6. What is the significance of the topic in immunology?
  7. What additional questions do you have on your topic?
