Jeremiah O'Rourke (1833-1915)

Jeremiah O'Rourke was born in Dublin, Ireland, and graduated from the Government School of Design in 1850. Shortly after, he emigrated to the United States and established a practice in Newark, New Jersey. O'Rourke was Patrick C. Keely's primary competitor for Roman Catholic church and institutional commissions in metropolitan New York and northern New Jersey. During the administration of Grover Cleveland, O'Rourke joined the office of the United States Supervising Architect in Washington where he prepared designs for a number of federal post offices. Eventually he returned to private practice with William P. O'Rourke, Joseph B. O'Rourke, and Louis J. O'Rourke; establishing the firm of Jeremiah O'Rourke & Sons with offices in Newark and New York. O'Rourke and his sons specialized in ecclesiastical designs. Several of the more important commissions in New Jersey include the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Camden; St. John's Church, Orange; and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Newark.
