James J. Wilhelm, The Romance of Arthur
The primary goal of this class is to help you appreciate Arthurian literature in its cultural context. To this end, we will be discussing King Arthur and the knights and heroes associated with him as fictional creations, subject to the tastes and talents of many authors and the hopes, fears, and beliefs of their audiences. We will also practice looking at literature closely and writing about it in a careful, formal, and persuasive way.
Please be aware that all but one of the texts in our anthology, whether they appear in verse or in prose, are modern English translations because they were originally written in another European language. (The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell is the single exception.)
