This course provides basic health information and surveys health issues in both society and the school setting. It is designed to acquaint candidates with understandings, attitudes, and practices that contribute to healthy lifestyles. It covers universal health concerns and addresses issues unique to diverse populations. Further, it encourages candidates to recognize health as a dynamic field and fosters critical thinking essential to health and well-being.
This course contributes to the classroom preparation of teacher education candidates by providing the knowledge and skills to foster good health in students as well as recognize unhealthy behavior patterns. It provides prevention and intervention strategies for substance abuse, child abuse and school violence. It prepares candidates to approach health related issues with respect to student gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and age.
This course meets the NYS Certification requirements for substance abuse, child abuse and safe schools.
Candidates will:
· understand the dimensions of health
· explore the relationship of mind, body and spirit
· recognize health as a dynamic state
· develop the foundation of knowledge essential to implementing a health
education curriculum and identifying health related problems in students
· investigate the influence of gender, ethnicity, income and disability on
health
· explore social issues related to substance abuse, child abuse and school
violence
Candidates will:
· discuss the role of the classroom teacher as a model of healthy behaviors
· demonstrate communication skills as keys to enhance wellness
· describe the components of a healthy and safe classroom
· discuss the dimensions of health with respect to diversity
· demonstrate through class discuss and assignments prevention and intervention
strategies for substance abuse, child abuse and school violence
· develop strategies for responding to emergency situations
Candidates will:
· understand the role of the classroom teacher in developing and implementing a
health education curriculum
· recognize the importance of the elementary teacher as a role model of healthy
behaviors
· know the significance of including contemporary health issues in daily
teaching
· understand the integration of health education with the elementary curriculum
· recognize the importance of diversity issues in teaching healthy behaviors
