Course Grade

A

Clear, complete, accurate, concise. Comprehensive understanding of concepts is obvious. Positions taken in answers are well substantiated; examples and evidence are exactly on-point and taken from several sources, integrated into the argument. Answers all parts of the question. Argument/ analysis is well developed. Goes beyond mere recitation of facts to analyze data. Displays thoughtful consideration. Superior.

Very few errors in spelling or grammar.

Essay flows without wandering.

 

Consistently earns high grades on written exams & papers.

Attends class & participates in discussions.

Submits work on time.

Reads all assigned material.

B

Displays strong understanding of concepts. Uses several reasonable examples to make points, though evidence could have been stronger. Perhaps has minor errors in fact or interpretation, or may miss part of the question. Good.

Few errors in spelling or grammar.

May have minor lapses in organization.

Ditto ‘A’

C

Displays basic understanding of the concepts in the readings & lectures. Explanations are perhaps vague rather than concise. Examples are relatively weak or too few. May include irrelevant points. May miss parts of the question. Does not go much beyond information presented in texts & readings. Average.

Errors in spelling and grammar apparent.

Organization of paper/essay not clear so argument is hard to follow.

Consistently earns average grades on written work.

May miss class.

May not do all the reading or read in-depth.

D

Misunderstands some aspects of concepts; or gives some incorrect information. Examples and substantiation are missing or incorrect. Misses parts of the question. Weak.

Frequent errors in grammar and spelling.

Lack of organization.

Consistently earns low grades on written work.

Misses class discussions.

Misses assignments.

E

No evidence of understanding the concepts of the course, or clear evidence of misunderstanding. Failing.

Hints:

§ Write what you mean! Be explicit—what you don’t say can hurt you! But including irrelevant material will hurt you as well.

§ During the in-class exam, write legibly! If I can’t read it, I can’t give you credit!
