Family-Peer Relationships: Cognitive, Emotional, and Ecological Determinants Abstract Parke and colleagues have proposed a three-tiered model that represents the modes by which parents influence their children's peer relationships. First, parents are viewed as influencing their children's peer relationships through childrearing practices and interactive styles. Second, parents are viewed as directly influencing their children's peer relationships in their role as instructors and educators. Third, parents are viewed as influencing their children's peer relationships through the management of children's social lives. The first aim of this chapter is to provide a brief overview of support for each of the three modes of linkage between family and peer systems. The second aim of this chapter is to review recent work that examines the processes that mediate the relations found between family and peer systems. The final aim of this chapter is to describe findings from a longitudinal study designed to examine mediating and moderating influences on the familial antecedents of children's peer competence. |
