Current Projects

NCATE

The major project underway is NCATE accreditation.  Education Studies and Services must be nationally accredited by December 2004.  To that end, the Department of Literacy Education submitted the Master of Science in Ed: Reading Teacher to the International Reading Association for review.  We are currently making revisions in our program to conform to the New York State Certification requirements and the IRA Professional Standards.

MENTORING

The Department of Literacy Education was fortunate to hire two new faculty members beginning in the Fall 2002 semester.  I am acting as the professional mentor for Dr. Aline Bobys.  Dr. Bobys has extensive background in education, including her years at Morningside College in Iowa.  She has experience with the NCATE accreditation process.  She is an dedicated, enthusiastic educator and a delightful person.

COMMITTEES

I am serving on committees related to NCATE accreditation.  I am also on several university-wide committees.  In the Fall 2002, I was appointed to a 3 year term on the University Assessment Committee.  I am a member of the Service Learning and Volunteerism Advisory Board.

SCHOLARSHIP

I have one manuscript accepted pending revisions; this manuscript was written collaboratively with Dr. Linda Garris-Christian.  She is currently a faculty member at Alamosa College in Alamosa, CO.  We were colleagues at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR.

I am currently working on a book with Dr. Hilly Bernard.  He is Curriculum Specialist for St. Tammany Parish and resides in Mandeville, LA.  Dr. Bernard introduced me to SIM, the Strategic Instructional Model.  I attended a two-day meeting in March, 2002, and was trained to implement several SIM Strategies.  Dr. Bernard gave a one-day introductory workshop about SIM in June at PSU.  My long-term goal is the obtain funding to train teachers in the region so that SIM can be implemented in a comprehensive manner.  Anyone have a million dollars to donate?!

I have several research ideas and pedagogical manuscripts "in formation."  Ah, so many manuscripts, so little time!

TEACHING

I am currently (Fall 2002) teaching four classes.  One of the classes in a PicTel class, which is being broadcast to Adirondack Community College in Queensbury.

I will be teaching a Winter Session class in 2003.  The class offered is EDR517 - Integrating Language Arts: A Collaborative Approach.  I taught this class in the 2002 Winter Session and it was a terrific experience for me (and the candidates, I hope!).

I'll be teaching 3 classes in the Spring 2003 semester.  As of 10/15/02, those classes are EDR315, EDR511, and EDR524

(10/08/02 - More information to come!)
