Eligibility:
Any student, at
any level of playing experience, may take private lessons provided he or she
meets the criteria set by the music department.
Auditions may be
required if there is over enrollment in the studio.
Concurrent
Requirements:
Low brass
students are required to participate in either jazz ensemble or the brass
choir). Waivers of this requirement are at the discretion of the instructor.
• Departmental requirements for fees, concert attendance,
and performance.
Meetings:
Students will
receive 13 half-hour lessons per semester. Times
will be arranged individually. All
lessons are taught in room 114E.
Objectives:
• to develop the technical proficiency of the student
on the instrument, including embouchure, instrument position, breathing,
articulation, etc.
• to develop the musical proficiency of the student,
including knowledge of repertory, interpretation of music, and working with an
accompanist.
Texts and
materials:
Texts vary with
the experience and skill level of the student. Expect to purchase at least one
etude book and a few solo works.
The student is
responsible for acquiring instrumental supplies.
Grading:
Students will be
graded on:
• attendance for lessons:
If you are unable to attend a lesson,
please notify the instructor in advance. We will work together to try to
reschedule the lesson during the same week. Lessons missed without advance
notice are forfeited and considered an unexcused absence. One unexcused absence
will not affect the grade; each thereafter will lower the grade by one-half
letter. Lessons missed with advance notice can be made up. In the case that the
instructor cannot be present, the lesson will be made up at a later time.
• preparation of assigned weekly material
• progress from beginning of semester
• ability to perform at appropriate standards relative to
your experience
