Environmental Planning

Basic concepts and procedures of environmental planning, including environmental design concepts, open space conservation strategies, watershed protection, land use regulations, socio-economic and political factors, and planning in the Adirondack and Catskill parks.

Introduction to Geographic Information Systems

Principles of geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping.  Use of ArcGIS software to prepare maps, and to store, retrieve and analyse spatial data.

Geographic Information Systems Applications

Use of geographic information systems for analysis.  Applications in the environmental sciences and planning.  Use of ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, and 3-D Analyst software. 

Environmental Impact Assessment

Study of the environmental impact assessment process, including federal (NEPA), state (SEQR), and local regulations;  environmental impact statement preparation; assessment methodologies; and public participation.  Case studies illustrate a variety of impacts.
