4. Video Set on the Nation-State

The nation-state is what holds the culture of capitalism together; it makes and enforces the rules that we play by, and, if someone (or a country, for that matter) refuses to play by those rules, nation-states may use their monopoly on legal violence to enforce the rules.  The videos in this set deal, in one way or another, the nation-state.  The video may examine how strong states enforce their will on small states (e.g. The Secret Government), or how elites use the power of the media to reinforce their view of the world on others (e.g. The Century of the Self).  Other videos in the set examine the strategies that nation-states and their clients use to maintain economies (e.g. The Shock Doctrine). The videos also examine other subjects discussed in the chapter on the nation-state in Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism, such as the Iraq War and the role of oil and corporations.

The Secret Government: Bill Moyers, the respected TV journalist, analyzes the threats to constitutional government posed by an illegitimate network of superpatriots", spies, profiteers, mercenaries and ex-generals. His documentary gives a fascinating overview of what has actually happened in the last 50 years regarding the CIA and the Cold War (including Iran, Guatamala, Cuba, Vietnam and Chile). He features such people as Ralph McGeehee and Phil Retinger (both former CIA agents), Rear Admiral Gene La Rocque (Ret. U.S.N.), Theodore Bissell (active in the CIA at the time), Sen. Frank Church and many others.  This is an excerpt that details the history of the secret government.
