            1.  More sensitive than Flame AAS

                            Pb in flame      =  100 ppb
                            Pb in Furnace    =  0.1 ppb
                       Isolates larger population of atoms in light path

                     2.  More elements  -  especially transition elements

                       Higher temp.  (Flame - 1,700^oC)
                                         (Electrothermal Vaporization   1,200 - 3,000^oC)

                        More e^- go to excited state at high temp's;  higher sensitivity
