Thanks for two very thoughtful reponses. I, too, was pushed more toward the environmentalist theories of language acquisition by the film, though I think Chomsky might reply that the ability to link signs, words, and symbols into meaningful syntax/language is the "wired in" part of speech. It's interesting, regarding college life, that the independence and individual responsibility you point up is also reflected in the academic ideal of independent work and thought and critical thinking. There are a lot of such moral dimensions of learning that we'll discuss later when we examine Perry's Continuum in more detail. Thanks for responding. I'm glad the forum is back on line.
