Thanks for your insightful posting. It's interesting, I think, that recovering alcoholics, for instance, do speak of a deep-seated change in the lives, including recovery of feelings of childhood excitement and playfulness. Also, the 12-step programs also work from a spiritual - though not strictly religious - worldview. Perhaps what's at work here is a dynamic of change that better realigns the "soul" (however that is define!) and the self.
