Sorry to respond this late to your posting. I did write a response earlier but apparently it didn't make it to the page. I think you're right that the whole issue of Kaysen's "mental illness" remains up in the air...or so it seems from her own account of the experience. It's puzzling, too, that her diagnosis is vague in itself - "character" or "personality" disorder, and that her therapy likewise appears to haphazard. In fact, these "character disorder" diagnoses seem loose in themselves, probably reflecting the various eccentric lifestyles you point out.
