Thanks Professor for the comments. Even though there was a conflict on the outside of the hospital in Boston i.e. race riots,Vietnam and the such during the turbulant 60's, all this was acted out in front of Kaysen, and her counterparts. However, Nurse Ratched, the main villian in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was constatly going after the men. This was the main conflict through the eyes of Chief Bromden. Nurse Ratched was evil in her systematic de-socialzation of the ward. Day-by-day breaking the men apart... for just being men. For this Nurse Ratched was nicknamed the "ball-cutter", Just as Sedgewick would say. Nurse Ratched also was sexually repressed as stated in the book. Kaysen's ward, however did not have this. There was this inmate-nurse relationship that actually worked. Some of the people in Kaysen's story were menatlly disturbed. In Kesey's book many were not.
