This seems to be a great story... How could a man abandon everything he has ever known, or ever had, and throw it all away? It seems that he is resocializing and "Transforming himself" away from society, and trying to become one with the nature that created us.
He had so many chances to go back home, even after meeting all those hitchikers. In the book, every single person tells the same thing; that Chris/Alex is a good kid, except for the manager at Mcdonalds, and I believe that he is an honest man in a screwed up society, trying to break free from the chains that has held his life down, even taking on an expedition that unfortunately ends his life.
It is almost like that movie "Cast Away" when the main character Tom Hanks is marooned on an Island after a plane crash, leaving behind his job and his finance'. Years have gone befoe he is finally rescued. He inheirtly is changed from a modern man, to a neanderthal (early-man), forgetting all that has been learned in the past 25 years or so.
That plane that crashed, however, did contain gifts and boxes because it belonged to the Fedex Company. Years later, Tom Hanks brings this gifts (long overdue) back to their owners.
In the the last scene, Hanks asks(pointing) what one of the roads leads to. The character says "Rt.9". But then Hanks points to another road and asks the same question; the answer "No where", and Hanks takes that road, because he has lost everything.....
