Information concerning the teaching practicum
Overview
The aim of the teaching practicum is to provide students with experience in teaching a psychology course. Students will learn how to effectively communicate information to a wide variety of people, understand the bare-bones of managing a class, and gain a deeper understanding of the course material—the best way to learn is by teaching someone else!
Several faculty teach sections of the teaching practicum. In my section, students assist with PSY105. The main duties involve leading laboratory groups. Additionally, you are expected to read the course material, attend weekly meetings, evaluate assignments, and assist in general operation, maintenance, and evaluation of the course.
Minimum Requirements
- At least a B in the class you will be a TA for (but "A" is strongly preferred, and generally positions only go to "A" students).
- At least a 3.0 overall GPA
- Junior standing at the time the course is offered (exceptional sophomores will be considered)
- Completion of at least 12 psychology credits (ideally including PSY205 and PSY206)
- Permission from me
Be aware that being a teaching apprentice is a serious duty. Students must be responsible, and are expected to attend all the assigned sections and meetings and be prepared by reading all necessary material.
If you are interested in being a teaching apprentice, please check with me during advising time for the upcoming semester.
