CDS 450 Communication Disorders in Special Populations
Course Description
In this course, relationships between communication disorders
and a variety of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders in children
and adults are discussed. In addition, the communicative, cognitive and behavioral
characteristics of special populations (including autism, selective mutism,
and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) are presented. Students learn
how attention, memory, executive functioning, and auditory processing play
a role in the communicative and behavioral functioning of individuals with
communication disorders. Students learn to assess and manage challenging behaviors
and social skill deficits in individuals with communication disorder. The
roles of the speech/language pathologist in the management of these disorders,
as part of a team, are explored.
