This is a Point Bar along the Au Sable River in Northern New York. Most people think of it simply as a "sand bar", but it is, in fact, a type of depositional environment. You can explore the Point Bar, as if you were walking around on it, by clicking on different parts of the photo, or by choosing "Edge of Forest", "Upper Part of Bar", or "Bar Platform" (see illustration below for location guide). As you explore, note the different aspects of the environment (size of the sand, topographic features of the sand bar, plants, animals, etc.). Any and all aspects of the bar can be important. In many cases, you can dig a shallow trench to see what the area looks like stratigraphically. You will use these features to create a model for a "Point Bar". Once you have compiled your model, you can then use it to determine if a sandstone outcrop is, in fact, the fossil remains of a Point Bar environment like the one illustrated above.
NOTE: The "Dig" command is currently only available for the Bar Platform and the Edge of the Forest. Other commands to examine sand size, plants, etc. are not currently available due to the lack of photo images. |
