BACKGROUND INFORMATION  (Subject-specific encyclopedias)

Find subject encyclopedias in the Reference Room of Feinberg Library by using the Advanced Search mode of the Library Catalog by title, subject, or keyword using terms such as "encyclopedia" and "music*", "classical", or "jazz*" and Limit by collection to "Reference Coll."   Most are shelved in the ML80-ML120 Library of Congress Classification ranges.  The most comprehensive and scholarly of all music encyclopedias is

Arts & Humanities Citation Index -- Indexes bibliographies in arts and humanities journals.

NAXOS Music Library -- "...the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of over 130,000 tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk and Chinese music.  Whilst listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database."
