WHAT IS A SCHOLARLY JOURNAL?

One common way in which academics present their research to the scholarly community is to publish articles in scholarly journals.  Journals are similar to magazines but the material is usually written by experts for experts.  Articles are heavily supported by research as evidenced by the many cited references (or footnotes) included within.
