Course Overview: This course covers the general ecology of lotic ecosystems.
Textbook: Allan, J.D. 1995. Stream Ecology. Chapman and Hall.
Prerequisites
ENV 304, BIO 304Class meeting times: 2 lectures, 1 lab period per week
Grading:
Grading will be determined by participation in class and laboratory, performance on the citation assignments, along with written assignments and exams (river research proposal, research report, mid-term exam, final exam). Exams will cover the major topics covered in the course.
Lecture Requirements: 2/3 of the total grade
The lecture grade includes participation in class discussion and assignments (e.g., citation assignments) along with two exams.
Mid-term Exam - To be given during week 7 or 8.
Final Exam- Finals week-
Laboratory Requirements: 1/3 of the total grade
Lab grade includes attendance, participation in laboratory and field trip activities, the laboratory research proposal, final research report, and other special assignments. A separate handout describes the laboratory research report.
Class attendance: Attendance will be taken in both Lecture and laboratory sessions. Attendance is required to complete this course and will be considered in the final grade evaluation. Students with more than TWO (2) unexcused absences will receive a failing grade for the laboratory portion of the course. Students who have excused or unexcused absences from either lecture or lab will be required to make up missed work and assignments. All assignment due dates are final due dates. Makeup exams or quizzes will not be given without a written excuse (e.g., medical doctors note).
