Purpose of this Course:
This course is designed to give you advanced
training in broadcast radio management operations and procedures. Weekly
classes will explore the structure and organization of radio stations
through lectures and activities. You will practice your management skills
by fulfilling a management position at WARP, assisting CMM209 students,
and contributing to the WARP’s (cable access, tele-radio) radio
broadcasting operations. Additional activities will include training and evaluation projects,
as well as the development of a
resume-ready audition CD. Also, participation in WARP’s sister station,
WQKE, is strongly encouraged. Prerequisites:
CMM 118, CMM 232, and CMM 209

Course Policies:
->Chapter comprehension will be
monitored through class participation and chapter quizzes.

include a battery of comprehensive unit quizzes
& final.
The
penalties from plagiarism can be severe: from an F for the particular
assignment, to an F for the course, to academic expulsion from the

Student Expectations:
To
successfully complete CMM409 Radio Management Practicum, students are
expected to complete the following activities:

To
complete 10, one-hour air-shifts (1 per week) as announcer/combo
operator (including talk shows, voice-tracking, and
co-hosting opportunities).
·
To
hold various WARP management positions involving the completion of
separate weekly management duties OR to co-produce a bi-weekly talk show
segment (requires GM approval).
·
To
pass cumulative unit quizzes & a final exam based on class notes and the Radio Station
textbook.
·
To
assist with training and evaluations projects (with
CMM209/232).
·
To
submit both an aircheck tape and a Resume-ready audition CD.

FCC Production
Standards:
As defined by FCC standards, the use of
obscenity, indecency, and racial slurs are prohibited. Production work
cannot use language or material that depicts or describes, in terms
patently offensive as measured by contemporary local community standards for the
broadcast media, sexual or excretory activities or organs. The work cannot
depict or describe in a patently offensive way sexual conduct specifically
defined by applicable state law. The work cannot include the use of
obscene or indecent language, or material that is insensitive or
defamatory with reference to race, creed, or color.
WARP:
WARP
is is PSU’s radio broadcast training facility designated for cable-only
broadcasting over Campus Channel 10 and Charter Cable Channel 17. Located near the Digital Media Laboratories in
Yokum Hall, the WARP begins broadcasting mid-September
and ends
in early December.
Note: During the semester, WARP radio will be streaming on the
Internet. Simply go to WarpRadio.com and type in call letters BRGY.
.WQKE:
The college’s student-operated, FCC designated
on-air broadcast radio facility. The Quake’s alternative, college-radio
format broadcasts 10,000 milliwatts of power 7 days a week from 8AM to
2:30 AM daily, to both a campus-wide and a local community audience. WQKE
also reaches out with its music, talk shows, and sports programming. All
students enrolled in classes at Plattsburgh State who pay Student
Association dues are qualified to be a member of WQKE.
