Purpose of this Course:
This course is designed to give you advanced training in audio field recording and digital audio post-production. You will practice your recording skills through involvement with on-campus performance venues (musical, theatrical, etc.) where you will develop your post production expertise by using digital audio equipment to process and encode CDs of the venues you’ve recorded.

Prerequisites:
CMM 428 Advanced Radio Production
or
CMM 464 Digital Audio Recording Applications

Required Text:
Modern R
ecording Techniques (6th Ed.) by Huber & Runstein, Focal Press, ©2005.
Music-Based Field Recording Guide by Tim Clukey, (distributed in class) ©2008.
Recording Tips for Engineer (2nd Edition) by Tim Crich, Focal Press, ©2005.

Course Policies:

  • It is expected that all students enrolled in this class support the letter and the spirit of the Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the college catalog.
  • Attendance is required. If you are absent for more than 1 class, it will result in a 10% grade drop for EACH  additional absence.
  • If you are absent from any scheduled recording session you will get an E for this class.
  • NOTE: There is a mandatory lab fee of $25 for media materials/lab maintenance for this course.
  • Late attendance for pre-performance setup at any scheduled recording merits a full letter grade drop for this course.
  • Students must contact musical directors 7-10 days prior to the performance via e-mail which is copied to me at clukeytj@plattsburgh.edu or there is a 5% penalty taken off that project’s grade.
  • Performances must be processed, burned, labeled, CHECKED, and turned in to my office no later than 5 business days after the performance is recorded or there will be a 10% penalty taken off that project’s grade.
  • Performances that are poorly reviewed (before turning them into me) will receive an automatic 30% penalty taken off that project’s grade (but only after it has been corrected).
  • Project completion requires the use of Adobe Audition in Audio Lab 3. It is your responsibility to coordinate your use of the audio lab to deliver your projects on time and properly completed.

The Work:
  • Attend production meetings as appropriate to coordinate rehearsal and performance time
  • Generate positive producer / client relations
  • Attend pre- and post- show meetings with client
