Course Syllabus for Spring 2008

Objectives:
This is an advanced multimedia production course where you will:
     1.       Learn how to tell a story in various A/V formats using digital animation tools
     2.
       Expand your creative production horizons/capabilities as a student producer
     3.
       Produce “indie” film-style productions of varying lengths for a specific target audience
     4.
       Enhance your ability to execute ideas & employ critiques in a professional manner
     5.
       Utilize cutting-edge production technologies

You will learn how to construct broadcast-quality animations through the use of a variety of application software programs, with emphasis on Adobe/Macromedia Flash. You will continue to develop your expertise creating, digitizing, and manipulating images and sound as a means to craft a message with digital constructs. You will also further develop your web design capabilities through website construction and maintenance.

You will study the visual aesthetics in multimedia environments, exploring the various aspects of design and its use as a tool to assist, persuade, inform, and entertain. Your goal in this class is to develop professional, publishable products that effectively deliver a message to a target audience.

Course Policies:

  • It is expected that all students enrolled in this class support the letter and the spirit of the Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the college catalog.
  • Note: There is a mandatory lab fee of $25 for this course.
  • Attendance is required. Since this course meets only once a week, more than 1 absence will result in a 10% grade drop (10 pt total deduction) for EACH additional absence. 
  • Prompt class attendance is mandatory. No student who is more than 10 minutes late will be allowed admittance to the class (and it will be counted as an absence).  
  • A grade of B or better in this course is required for any multimedia-related internships.
  • Completion of production assignments is essential and compulsory. Students who fail to complete production assignments will receive a 5% grade drop for each incomplete assignment.
  • Projects and assignments are due when scheduled. Project completion requires the use and familiarity of various digital media software. On-campus access is provided in the Audio and Digital Media Labs. It is your responsibility to coordinate your use of the audio lab to deliver your projects on time. (Don’t wait until the day before!)
  • Students disrupting class with the use of laptops (or other devices/means) may be ejected from class at the instructor’s discretion and will be marked as absent for that day.
  • Walkmans/headphones/earbuds are not allowed to be worn in class and can result in a 5% grade drop.
  • Note: Some projects may entail team-based participation & grading. Only students actively involved in team-based activities earn the right to receive a grade.
  • Late assignments will result in a 25% deduction per day for the assignment. Makeups will only be allowed under extenuating circumstances (requiring notification to the Dean of Students Office).
