Psychometrics (PSY501)

I no longer teach this course. However, if you are a student in this course, the following information may be useful.

Psychometrics is the study of the measurement of psychological attributes. This course will consist of a statistics "primer" section lasting approximately 6-8 weeks, after which we will focus on more complex multivariate procedures and the application of statistics to testing data.

Places to Visit

David Howell's Home Page - This is the home page of the author of your text. From here you can access useful information relevant to this course.

Howell datasets - Here you will find all of the datasets used throughout Howell's text. They can also be found on the CD-ROM that came with the text but if you prefer to download them from the web for analysis, feel free to do so.

ViSta - The Visual Statistics System - This is an excellent statistical analysis program that will handle all of the analyses we will be doing in this course. It is a free download and you may want to check it out. Documentation can be obtained from this site as well.

Multivariate Statistics: Concepts, Models, and Applications by David Stockburger - This online textbook contains many fine explanations, examples, and visualizations that you may find useful to your understanding of multivariate analyses.

Bill Trochim's Center for Social Research Methods - A very useful resource although much of it is devoted to research methods that are not related to this course. However, from the home page, click on "knowledge base" and then select "measurement" from the menu on the left side of the next page. Here you will find a detailed discussion of the reliability and validity of psychological measurement.
